Class Description

This course provides an in-depth orientation to the actors, processes and institutions that make up the political system in Texas, with a strong emphasis on the development of applied knowledge. Instructional material focuses on how politics in Texas shapes the operation of Texas political institutions, with particular attention to the interplay between public opinion, conflict among elites and the policy environment in the state. The course relies extensively on interviews with current and former elected officials and political professionals to make the course material interesting and relevant to students.

This course is independent study and is self-paced. Students have five months upon registration in which to complete all coursework and exams.

Textbooks and Materials

Texas Politics, online webtext. Soomo Publishing. A direct purchase link for this textbook is provided within the course website (cost approximately $55).

Technical Requirements

Students are required to use a laptop or desktop computer with a high-speed internet connection. Tablets and smartphones are not supported. The computer should have a modern and updated operating system, at least 2GB of RAM, a webcam, a microphone and also meet Honorlock's system requirements for online testing.
