Advising

Advising for University Extension (UEX) is supported by staff in Extended Education Ventures. UEX advisors can help answer questions about students’ academic progress and can approve registrations into courses with specified prerequisites. Prospective UEX students are also encouraged to work closely with the advisor at their home institution to ensure the transferability and degree applicability of selected courses.

Request Advising Via Email, Phone or Zoom

UEX advisors will conduct academic advising via email, phone or Zoom. Please email uexadvising@austin.utexas.edu to connect with an advisor.

Benefits of Academic Advising

It is always a good idea to consult with an advisor before registering for any credit-bearing course.

Check Prerequisites and Get Course Approval

Although most UEX courses do not require approval prior to enrolling, we recommend connecting with a UEX Advisor to verify eligibility to enroll and readiness to take college-level coursework prior to enrolling, as some UEX courses require advisor approval.

Eligibility and Completion of Prerequisite Coursework

  • Self-paced online math and science courses, as well as semester-based language courses, are examples of courses where advising approval is necessary.
  • Select courses specify “Approval of the University Extension advisor” in the course description. To request this approval please complete this Advising Intake Form.

Readiness to Take College-Level Coursework

  • The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state-legislated program designed to improve students’ success in college. All students enrolling for academic credit at any Texas public college or university must pass the TSI Assessment or demonstrate exemption from the assessment. See our How to Enroll page for a list of TSI exemptions. Information about the TSI Assessment may also be obtained from the Texas Success Initiative office.

Transferability and Degree Applicability

UEX advisors engage with students to ensure that their course choices align with their academic goals and will contribute meaningfully to the students' academic progress, particularly for students planning to transfer UT Austin course credit earned through UEX to another institution.

Please note, transferability and degree applicability of courses taken through UEX is ultimately decided by the receiving institution.
