This intermediate Yiddish course develops Yiddish language proficiency through a focus on Yiddish storytelling. It emphasizes peer-to-peer communication and engagement with Yiddish as a global culture. Students improve their proficiency as speakers, writers, readers, and listeners of Yiddish through active engagement with a variety of Yiddish stories and speakers. They engage with written and oral genres of Yiddish narrative; strengthen their ability to read and analyze authentic texts and express themselves in writing; cultivate the ability to present in Yiddish, including the performance of literary texts; and enhance their ability to converse in Yiddish in spontaneous and prepared contexts. Games, archival visits, and oral history workshops cultivate the practical language skills students need to pursue Yiddish beyond the classroom.
