Class Description

This course is an introduction to American government and politics. While the main focus of the course is on the national level, additional attention is paid to the state and local governments of Texas. There are three primary objectives in this course. The first is to provide basic descriptive information about the American and Texas political systems by examining important political processes, institutions and actors. The second is to develop analytical skills by which to understand complex relationships and phenomena. The third is to introduce the work of the political scientist by concentrating on the paradigms and techniques of the discipline.

This course is independent study and is self-paced. Students have five months upon registration in which to complete all coursework and exams.

Textbooks and Materials

Texas Politics, 9th Edition, by the Texas Politics Project. Online webtext, ISBN: 978-1949164954 Soomo Learning. This is a custom webtext; students must purchase using the direct link provided within the course website (cost approximately $55).

Technical Requirements

Students are required to use a laptop or desktop computer with a high-speed internet connection. Tablets and smartphones are not supported. The computer should have a modern and updated operating system, at least 2GB of RAM, a webcam, a microphone and also meet Honorlock's system requirements for online testing.
