Class Description

This course develops fluency and precision in written and spoken Spanish, developing previously acquired abilities and basic knowledge that are necessary to communicate effectively in a medical setting with Spanish speaking persons with limited English proficiency (LEP). In this course, we emphasize the development of medical terminology and jargon, the application of daily activities for the medical field through three modes of interpretation: sight, consecutive, and simultaneous, as well as the acquisition of the ethical and cultural competency that is needed to serve as an interpreter. May be used to satisfy the Medical Interpreter Education requirement necessary to apply to take the NBCMI certification exam.

This course has no live class meetings, and for the most part can be done on the student’s own schedule. There are due dates for all assignments. There are also three types of assignments requiring in-person, synchronous participation online: once a week—five times during the entire course—students will work in small groups (3-4 students) to complete.

First class day: Monday, July 15
Last class day: Friday, August 16
Final exam: Instructor will provide information.
